SMO is an all-inclusive ecologically conscious surf resort located on the previously uninhabited island of Sibigau.

Our bamboo guest houses are directly in front of the world famous, extremely consistent left hand wave, Thunders! There was a time when surfing the unlimited waves of the Mentawai Island chain meant you had to do so on a live-aboard boat. Times have changed and there’s no reason to remain on that cramped boat any longer. Sibigau is situated in a prime location for day trips to surf lots of waves near by.

It’s possible to wake up before the sun, paddle straight out to the line up, or hop in the boat and get dropped off out the back, bag a morning session, refuel with a nice meal on land, and get back in the boat to explore the many waves near by! We have more than 10 waves in a 10 mile radius!

Come live on land, relax in a hammock, climb a tree, explore the solitude of the jungle, watch the wave all day while you’re not surfing it, or shredding waves close by, then retire to your private bamboo house with a queen size bed or share with a friend in a double, get a good night’s sleep and be ready to do it again!

Southern Mentawai Outpost is designed for people who want to experience the consistency, quality, and intensity of the incredible waves offered by the Southern portion of the Mentawai Islands. At the same time, you can take a guilt-free vacation knowing that you are leaving the smallest possible impact in a beautiful, pristine place – something that is becoming a commodity in today’s crowded and often polluted world.

Southern Mentawai Outpost

SMO started in the mind of Eric, while he was operating his surf charter boats. Not only was Thunders his favorite wave, it’s the most consistent! Often Eric found himself driving away from perfect waves at Thunders, he set his goal to build a home in front of the wave. This dream became reality when Ian and Eric met on his boat, “Addiction”. With so many waves close by they decided this is the perfect place to be.

We set out to create a sustainable piece of paradise in front of one of the most consistent waves of this world. Today we have expanded into working with the Indonesian government to make the previously uninhabited island of Sibigau a nature preserve in which we will be the stewards of the land. We are excited to grow into non-profit businesses teaching the local people of Mentawai how to farm more crops and build boats without having to chop down old-growth trees.

We look forward to sharing our stoke for this island and the perfect waves of the Southern Mentawai zone with you!

You could float around on a boat OR have a comfortable bed, incredible food (where somehow my celiac was catered for and entirely delicious) and the raw natural beauty of an island to explore. We could visit other breaks with Eric's expert guidance but having Thunders to dial in was a real challenge. We recommend including as much detail about your listing as possible and providing high resolution imagery that can give potential guests a true idea of what they can expect from your venue. Try to include the rooms, the setting, some of the meals and most importantly images of the activities you provide!

Absolutely nothing! It's completely free to list your venues on Tidal Trip and we only charge a 5% commission on successful bookings that you can track right from your dashboard.

When you submit a booking request you will be charged in full, if the host declines the booking of does not accept within 7 days you will be refund in full automatically. If the host accepts your funds will be held on behalf of the host.

Well that depends on your adventure! We always recommend taking a reusable water bottle, reef safe suncream or zinc along with appropriate clothing for the activities you have planned. If you need to know more please ask our team or your host and we'll try to guide you the best we can.
